Dry Pipes vs. Water Pipes

Dry Pipes vs. water pipes: a debate of the ages. Two wings on a bird that is not a bird but actually a pipe. Smoke shop fans have likely tried their hand at both, and most others have likely seen each type in passing – but what’s the difference between the two? Which one is best for you? If your collection includes a combination, which should you use when? Our online head shop team is here to answer these questions and more in today’s review of their key components and differences. So dawn your red hat and say “itsa me,” cause we’re about to talk so much about pipes, you’ll think you’re Mario.

What is a Dry Pipe?

A dry pipe is rather simple. It has a bowl for your preferred legal smoking material (such as tobacco or cannabis) a chamber, a mouthpiece, and a valve on the side. They can be rather small, straightforward pipes. Sometimes people just refer to dry pipes as “pipes,” which really reinforces the “classic” nature of these pipes. They can also be called “spoon pipes” due to their often vaguely spoon-like shape.

What is a Water Pipe?

A water pipe is slightly more complex. It introduces a new component to the experience of a dry pipe. Any guesses as to what that is? If you said “water,” congrats! You win… nothing. It was in the name. No one is impressed, Chad. But yes, as the name implies, water pipes require you to fill a part with water. The smoke from the bowl gets filtered through water, similar to larger bongs. Important note: if you consider plants to be a product of the earth, then water pipes contain all four elements: earth in the bowl, air which carries the smoke, fire which burns, and obviously water. We’re not saying anyone does or should call water pipes “avatar pipes” as a nickname, just that they could.

Why Might I Prefer a Dry Pipe?

Dry pipes are easier. They take less effort to set up, and exactly 0 trips to the sink. They’re also generally smaller, and easier to slip into a pocket and take on the go. Are you an on the go essential professional who wants to be able to take a smoke break wherever, whenever? Are you the sort of person who prefers to not have to do even five minutes of “work” to have a relaxing smoke? A dry pipe might be for you. However, it will be less of a smooth experience, the smoke you inhale will be warmer, and you’ll get high less quickly, so be warned of the trade offs.

Why Might I Prefer a Water Pipe?

Water pipes take just a little more care, but reward that effort. Made out of hollowed out gourds in the old days, today they’re often a little bulkier, and might feel more at home in a purse or backpack than a small pocket, depending. They require you to fill them up with water, and it can take a few times with a brand new water pipe to find the “sweet spot” for how much water you want, where you filter enough but also don’t inhibit suction. But a water pipe will not only filter the smoke, but cool it, giving you an experience some consider nicer. And, given that cannabinoids are not water soluble, this filtration won’t filter out the “active ingredients,” and will in fact make it easier to take a longer hit and boost the impact of your chosen legal herb.

Are you the sort of person who stays at home whenever possible, and even gets your pipes delivered to you directly from our online smoke shop? Are you the sort of person who gets anxiety any time you cough for any reason? Do you prefer a cooler, smoother smoking experience? A water pipe might be for you.

Is a Dry Pipe or a Water Pipe Best for Me?

At the end of the day, this really comes down to personal preference. However, there is a bold, third option you may not have considered: why not both? Dry pipes and water pipes both have their strengths and weaknesses and are applicable for different situations and for different purposes. A nice relaxing Friday night at home? Fill up the water pipe. Need something that can fit in your pocket as you go on grand adventures and can be lit in moments? Grab a dry pipe! It’s important to always have the right tool for the job. And these are just two options, we haven’t even discussed other possibilities, like vaporizers! Head on over to our shop, and give them a try for yourself.
